In November 2018, I participated in a conference titled ‘A Clockwork Symposium: A Clockwork Orange, New Perspectives’, held at London College of Communication, University of the Arts London. My paper was on how Stanley Kubrick adapted Anthony Burgess’ language in order to portray a slightly different Alex – the story’s protagonist. The paper layered this with thoughts on biotechnology (in this instance, the Ludovico Technique) and its relationship to language and free will.
Following from the conference, I contributed to a book published by Palgrave Macmillan on the very topic, Anthony Burgess, Stanley Kubrick and A Clockwork Orange (eds. Matthew Melia & Georgina Orgill, 2023) Palgrave Studies in Adaptation and Visual Culture. London: Palgrave Macmillan.
My chapter from the book, titled ‘A thing living, and not growing’, is here.
