Hiwa K is an Iraqi artist, and one of the nicest, thoughtful, and most generous people I’ve ever had the pleasure to spend time with.
The Estrangement project was a curatorial initiative by Polish curator Aneta Szylakand artist Hiwa K. Between April and June 2010, Estrangement was hosted at The Showroom, London.
The first part of Estrangement, by artist Joanna Rajkowska, was a project to build within the gallery and parade around the Edgware Road/Church Street Market area a chariot, and featured elsewhere on this site. The above is a film I made of a performance by Hiwa K, and orchestra. His collaborator Jim White is a former American soldier and caretaker of a German art academy. Hiwa taught Jim to play country guitar music. This performance took place on 20 April 2010 at The Cockpit Theatre.
With thanks to Emily Pethick, Kate Stancliffe, Natasha Tebbs and everyone at The Showroom; Hiwa K and Aneta Szylak; Ian Serfontein; Jim White, and The Cockpit Theatre.
